Chapter 1
I, like everyone else, always dreamed of being the hero of the game. Especially since my real life was far from heroic.
The game I played, 'Military Chronicle,' was set in a world where 20% of humanity had transformed into monstrous villains due to an unidentified alien wave.
To combat these villains, humanity had developed war machines called 'Military Units,' and players would take on the role of one of these units, fighting on the frontlines.
The world of 'Military Chronicle' was a place where all the myths and legends we know were recorded as historical facts.
Because of this, magic and martial arts had been passed down from ancient civilizations, and these 'Military Units' used these powers to fight the villains.
I was drawn to the game's unique setting and the idea of being the protagonist on the battlefield, so I started playing without much thought.
And without much thought, I left a single comment.
It went something like this: 'I think they made this game in the toilet. I can't tell if they made a game or just took a crap. What a piece of shit game. Rating: 1/5.'
I was so frustrated because I kept dying instead of being the hero. It was obvious that the developers had intentionally increased the difficulty to sell more in-game items.
But looking back now, I think that comment was a mistake.
Because the very night I left that comment, I found myself transported into the game...
[You have joined the battle as a player in Military Chronicle.]
[The 'Blood Demon' trait has awakened within you.]
[A quest has arrived.]
[Main Quest: Survive until the end of the story.]
At first, I had no idea what was going on, but since the goal was simply to survive, I tried my best. It didn't seem too difficult; all I had to do was stay alive.
But I had no idea how hard it would actually be.
"You disgusting monster! Just die already!"
CRASH-!
A flash of light erupted from the Military Unit's blade, and my body and head were severed.
"Finally, the 'Blood Demon' is down!"
"As expected of one of the 'High Society's' Four Evils, he was a formidable opponent."
"Formidable? He's just a filthy monster! Ugh, spit!"
The Seven Heroes, humanity's strongest military unit, spat on my corpse as they walked away. I could hear their laughter as my consciousness faded.
'I'm dead again.'
I couldn't even remember how many times I had died.
Despite the quest telling me to survive, I kept dying at the hands of the Military Units in this cursed game.
Of course I did. I was the villain.
For some reason, instead of being a Military Unit, I had been thrown into this hellish game as a villain.
Cursed with endless restarts, I was forced to start over from the beginning every time I died.
'How am I supposed to survive with a crappy trait like this?'
The villain I had been turned into, the 'Blood Demon,' was a kind of vampire who lived by sucking human blood.
As a one-time mid-boss, I was supposed to provide experience points to the early-game Military Unit trainees and then quickly be eliminated.
I was a weak villain, so I had to rely on illusions and transformation spells to survive.
And to make things even harder, I had to feed on human blood regularly or I would die.
During my first playthrough, I was brutally murdered by the trainees.
In my second and third playthroughs, I tried to fight back, but even with increased power, I couldn't defeat the trainee cadets as a low-level 'Blood Demon'.
It took me 20 deaths to realize that.
'So I came up with a different plan.'
My new plan was to avoid the trainees from the very beginning.
If I couldn't win, I would just dodge.
After countless deaths, I finally found a way to avoid the early-stage military cadets and buy myself enough time to grow stronger.
I considered the possibility of simply hiding until the story reached its climax, but...
‘There's no way that's possible in this game.’
‘Military Chronicle’ is a game with dozens, even hundreds, of branching paths depending on the player's choices. Most of these branches lead to a story where the Seven Heroes eliminate all the villains before the final chapter.
To complete the quest to survive until the end, I had no choice but to stop the Seven Heroes myself.
That's why I planned to join the ‘High Society,’ a powerful villain organization.
‘I thought I could stop them there.’
According to my calculations, that should have worked.
By becoming one of the ‘Four Evils,’ the powerful villain leaders of the High Society, and commanding my own villain army, I thought I could defeat the Seven Heroes.
But for some reason, they always seemed to be stronger than I had anticipated. I had repeated the ‘Four Evils’ route dozens of times, but I never managed to survive.
Thinking something was wrong, I tried switching villain allies.
I tried learning different abilities.
I even tried assassinating the future Seven Heroes in advance...
No matter what I did, the results were always the same. The Seven Heroes were always born, and I always died at their hands.
Just like today.
‘My head hurts.’
Even as my neck was severed, my head throbbed. Since the moment I entered this game, all I've done is obsess over survival.
482 years in training.
175,930 days, if you count them.
4,222,320 hours...
I've tried everything, considered every possibility, but no matter what I do, I can't escape death.
Realizing that, I no longer wanted to do anything. I even wished I could just die and end it all.
Beep-
[You have failed to complete the main quest.]
[Returning to the beginning. Starting playthrough 138.]
But as if to say even that wish was too much, a message echoed in my mind, dragging me back to that dark place.
Back to where it all began.
